Health Talk- Doctor's Love Letter on Breast Cancer And The Relevance Of Its Early Detection

Dear Friend,

What exactly is breast cancer? Breast cancer like all cancer is formed by an abnormal growth of one cell in the breast. This newly formed cell multiplies and grows rapidly and uncontrollably, irrespective of the growth regulation mechanism of the body, into lump of cells, with the inter-mixture of fat and connective tissue forms mass (lump).

The recent alarm on rising global incidence of cancer by the World Health Organisation (WHO) should worry African countries, including Nigeria, where the disease is most prevalent. Available statistics show that in 2008 cancer killed 7.6 million persons worldwide, and there is indication that the figure could double to 13 million by 2030.

According to WHO, cancer accounts for 13 percent of all deaths registered globally and 70 percent of that figure occurs in middle and low income countries. In Nigeria, about 10,000 cancer deaths are recorded annually while 250,000 new cases are recorded yearly. It is also worrisome that only 17 percent of African countries are said to have sufficiently funded cancer control programmes, while less than half of all countries in the world have functional plans to prevent the disease and provide treatment and care to patients.

WHO indicates that the shortage of functional cancer control plans is especially alarming in developing countries, which already account for more than two-thirds of the new cancer cases and deaths each year. Most cancer treatment centres in Nigeria today lack modern diagnostic equipment for diagnosing the condition. Generally, there is lack of awareness on the disease, especially the causative factors, preventative measures, likely treatment options and facilities where such treatments are available.
According to Dr. Andreas Ullrich of WHO’s Department of Chronic Diseases, the situation might get worse in metropolitan areas of the developing world as populations age and increasingly feel the impact of exposure to major risk factors such as tobacco, certain chemicals and infections. Ullrich also explains that up to a third of all cancer deaths are linked to “modifiable risks” like tobacco, obesity and harmful use of alcohol. However, Ullrich explains that if detected early, many types of cancer can be cured.

In Nigeria, members of the public still see cancer as a disease of the wealthy, the elderly and developed countries. Many sufferers of the disease in the country still regard it as their fate and, as such, a death sentence. Cancer is not just a health issue; it has far-reaching social and economic implications. It also does not discriminate. It is a global epidemic that affects all ages with low and middle income countries bearing a disproportionate burden of it. There are many types of cancer. In Nigeria, breast and cervical cancers are commonest among women while prostate cancer is more prevalent in men.

WHY THE EARLY DETECTION SYNDROME OR WHY THE FUSS ON EARLY DETECTION?

If discovered at an early stage when the lump is
realised in the breast (ductal-insitu; big grammar I
know), it may require just a removal of the mass (lumpectomy; another big medical grammar) to cure since not all lumps are cancer.

To rule out cancer, every lump removed from the breast must be examined in the laboratory by a Scientist. If not discovered early enough, the lump would have reached a stage where the cancer cells would have broken and follow the blood stream through the vessels to other organs like the lumps, liver and bone e.t.c. (metastatic stage).

At this stage it becomes very difficult and extremely
expensive to treat, you will need not only removal of the lumps but whole breast (mastectomy), treatment with radiation (radiotherapy) radical treatment with medication (chemotherapy).

Therefore, early detection through self breast examination or the daily rigorous squeezing of the breast by your spouse is very important in treatment and cure of breast cancer and cannot be over emphasised. Yes, breast cancer is curable if detected and treated early enough..

This is my advice for those funny folks who don't want to find love and share a bed with a spouse that would "medically" treat them right after observing all the due bonding rights I mean. Maybe it's because they've been heart broken before. Move on! Find love to reduce the number of cancer casualties. Forgive anybody who hurts you, don't bear a grudge so that it doesn't grow as a lump in your body. You don't want to be a victim. Be free. Forgive all men and don't generalise an individual's fault. I know also that some Yoruba Demons can be very deceitful and sweep you off your feet quickly with infatuation and flashy things without you being aware of their rope of sand intentions.

Infatuation is not love but the bearing force behind lust. When a man truly decides to be in love that's when he decides to sacrifice. Love is always blind for those that can't see its true image, it is always dumb for those that can't say the minds of the hearts. Love is never old, it is always new, always, with the same person you love especially when you know how to find new ways to love. To fall in love is not the problem but it is the heart which you are falling in love with. You can never give love when you don't have it.

Cancer affects both males and females, and I urge you to employ your partner or volunteer yourself to fight the surge and also visit a Masseur this weekend. Find love. One in every 25 women die of cancer because they fail to detect early enough and go for screenings. Breast Cancer constitutes a major public health issue globally with over 1 million new cases  diagnosed annually, resulting in over 400,000 annual deaths and about 4.4 million women living with the disease.

The disease should no longer be treated as a death sentence or something that has to do with fate. The public should be sensitized on predisposing lifestyle factors like smoking, drinking, obesity, lack of exercise and exposure to carcinogenic products and elements. There is also the need for regular medical check up considering the fact that early detection of thedisease is paramount to its cure.Government should set up a comprehensive cancer control programme. Let the Federal Ministry of Health  spearhead nationwide campaigns targeted at reducing the cancer scourge in the country. States and local governments should also join hands with the federal government in the fight against cancer in all its ramifications.

Let us also support the victims who have been confined to various sick beds in different Cancer care units across Nigeria. Make a donation to their course to improve the medical facilities used in providing effective facility. Visit any Healthcare emergency ward close to your house to show your support. Don't wait until it happens to your neighbour before you become proactive. "Had I known is a brother to Mr. Too Late."

Best Regards,

Doctor Love 1 of POATV
